A new research report published on May 7th, 2026 by the Retirement Planning Council of Ireland (RPCI), alongside FPSB Ireland, IOB and LIA highlights an often overlooked reality - retirement planning is about much more than finances alone.

While pensions and savings remain critical, the findings show a significant gap in how prepared people feel for the broader transition. Just 32% of employers believe employees are ready for the lifestyle changes retirement brings, from shifts in routine to changes in social connection and sense of purpose.

This matters. Retirement is one of the biggest life transitions people face, yet many approach it without a clear plan for how they will spend their time, stay connected, or maintain a sense of identity beyond work. The result is uncertainty, delayed retirement decisions, and, in many cases, a less positive experience than it should be.

At RPCI, we see every day the value of taking a more holistic approach. Preparing people for retirement means helping them think beyond income, to how they will live, engage, and thrive in the next stage of life. Structured, evidence-based programmes can support people to make this transition with confidence, clarity and purpose.
